2001: A Space Odyssey
The movie 2001: A Space Odyssey is a Science fiction movie that I truly was bored by. This wasn’t the typical movie I would watch for fun and I wasn’t giving it much of a chance. It starts out with the beginning of man and the development of the “1st tool” and then all of the sudden it shift to the year 2001, I really dislike Kubrick’s vision. I really don’t think the start of man is needed, and just adds to the two and a half hour movie.
But when I had to watch the second half of the movie with two kids on my floor who particurally enjoy and respect this movie.
They began to explain to me that this movie was broken up into four parts. One being the apes, and then to show where mankind has gone from the first tool discovered by man to space ships connecting different people and traveling to different planets. And, if you read deeper into this second part you find out that Stanley Kubrick set a bar for all the rest of science-fiction film makers. As we learned in class that he brought in legitmate engineers to work on the special effects for him and he had no such thing as computer graphics back in 1968 and before that while this movie was being put together. All these effects were taking a tremendous amount of work and money. Then when you take into consideration the ideas that went into the interior of the spaceships and how Kubrick portrayed zero-garvity it is all the more impressive.
Then when it gets into the third and fourth parts or acts of this movie, I feel like it is even a deeper look into the future. When the robot, HAL 9000 enter into the picture, I feel like it is set even out of time from even part two. In Parts three and four man and machine are working hand and hand. Then the trip to Jupiter and other planets etc, These are the parts I enjoyed the most about this movie because, It is still something that hasn’t exactly been done yet. This was just Kubrick’s imagination taking over in filmmaking and I think that’s pretty cool.
The final thought that I would like to touch on about 2001: A Space oddeseey, is a statement that a kid on my floor said to me while speaking about this movie. And it was this “2001: A space Odessey was made before we had even put a man on the moon”. That statement right there is one that certainly makes you think. And, when you think about that statement, it leads you into wondering how it was all done. And the truth is, this was all Kubrick visualizing what his perception of Space looked liked, the ships, the planets, zero gravity. It was all a vison. Kubrick had no prior knowledge on how space would feel or what you could or couldn’t do, it was his vision and it makes this film that much cooler, to think that this film wasn’t as much a movie as it was a piece of art and a way to try and get people to look deeper into the details of the future.

12-1

The reading for today's class is one that i feel is finalizing the class, in forming a portfolio. This has been reviewed with me in other classes, but i thought some points could be highlighted from this reading. For instance the drafts are to be saved to, and if you think of it, it makes sense to see the changes that you have made. Which is most probably why we have been saving all of our work in this class the entire time. The last thing that is notable is the self assessment, it is one point of a portfolio that I had never really thought of.

Nortons field guide to writing pgs. 120-126

This lesson in Norton's field guide to writing fits in perfectly in this week, because all the tips on pages 122 and 123 will certainly help me write the evaluation for Space Odyssey 2001. I do feel at times that i go too in depth and it hurts the persuasion of my story to my readers which is why point number one on giving a brief description was food for thought to myself.
The second point that i am fond of is a knowledgeable discussion of the topic. I say this because at this point in the movie I will admit I am a bit confused and have kinda been judging the movie when we are not even halfway through it. This brings another point of "a balanced and fair assessment" because I truly can't write my assessment of this movie if I have immediately labeled it stupid.

Thursday 15th OCT

Chapters 47-48 on Media design is one that I am a bit rushing because i wasn't aware of a post today with the final over my head. But, as I was reading a lot of the stuff was being rehashed from my news classes. Notable parts that i find useful though are how you approach different audiences and what the headlines read etc. Wither that be to adults, businessmen children you need to stylize different headline and text different ways. And the last this is cropping photos just to put the individuals involved in the story on page 461.

Thursday (Chicago Tribune)

by Rohan Sullivan of the Associated Press

In the final day of covering the flooding in SE Asia, and once again the death toll in the Philippines climbed once again to 331. This article was just updated from earlier from Wednesday so the story line hadn't changed much from the day before. But, with the number of deaths rising again it shows that this story ranks high on news values, due to the fact that the death toll increased every single day after the initial flooding. Magnitude is higher once again and should continue for the rest of the week since more deaths come in everyday. And now Impact is maybe a tad bit higher to Americans as Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner announced that his men will be assisting the recovery effort with truck bulldozers and forklifts etc. Now that there are Americans aiding the effort and more deaths come in everyday, I believe that this will still be on the news for a while. So Once again Magnitude and Conflict are high, and Names in News and Impact have increased, along with Proximity now that Americans are involved in the cause.

Wensday News (Cincinnati Enquier/USA Today)

The article Wednesday from the Enquirer speaks of the death toll rising once again in the Philippines to 286. But the article also speaks of the destruction in countries like Cambodia and Vietnam. The effect of Typhoon Ketsana into other countries brings more prominence to this news story now that it is effecting all of SE Asia. The death count in more than 300 and 286 in Philippines. The Magnitude is huge again as the death toll rises again and now all of SE Asia is being effected. I really don't have impact in this because there isn't a terrible amount of it, cause there probably aren't a great percent of Americans effected by this storm. With all these countries added to the disaster, Novelty is getting higher due to the rarity of this storm as well

Tuesdsay (newyorktimes.com)

When I looked at newyorktimes.com on Tuesday night i was shocked at the headline which read 246 dead. The number had once again increased by at least 100 more from the day before.
The news value of magnitude and conflict just keep on rising. There is a very powerful picture of the capital city of Milan that truly shows the conflict of Natural Disaster. Then with the death toll rising again just adds to magnitude and the article speaks of the 2.3 million people without homes which just increases the magnitude of this story with many people, even if you are not effected you are concerned and mourn for them. And, names in the news is even greater in the Times online article, when they mention that the President of The Philippines Gloria Macapagal Arroyo opened up the Presidential Palace to refugees and was serving food to her people. This also makes this story a semi-human interest piece although it is still hard news.

Monday News

On Monday CNN.com said that the death toll in Manila and the Northern Philippines had climbed 100 more spots from 40 to 140. They then inform you of the situation in the capital city with impassable roads etc.
The same news from Sunday is still high in this case with Novelty and Magnitude. And, now that the number of deaths had increased even higher within a day Magnitude is even greater. Another news value that is unfathomably high is that of Conflict, I wasn't taking the Natural disaster into consideration but that makes this news story score even higher. And in the article on Monday, they news got a quote from the Chairman of the Red Cross in the Philippines which now incorporates the news value Names in News.

Sunday (news values)

This is being written because the news coverage of Sunday that I gave was more or less just a summary versus news values.
This story about the flooding in the northern Philippines scores extremely high on Novelty and Magnitude. Novelty due to the fact that the northern part of the country got nearly more rain in 6 hours than that part of the country gets in a entire month. And Obviously Magnitude factors in because a entire nation is being effected.

News 105 Blog (Sunday National News)

Sunday 27th
Flooding in the Philippines began today in which Manila was at one point 80 percent under water. as reported at this time. According to CNN.com Manila gets an average of 15.4 inches of rain in September and the capital got an astounding 13.4 inches of rain in just six hours. The death count was at 40 when the national news aired on Sunday night (ABC news with Charles Gibson). And you would have to assume would continue to climb as this story is still young that it just happened on Sunday an was being reported that night.

thursday 24th

This blog is about the reading in chapter 36 which suggest on how to ask questions and grasp what your reading. One problem I have that this chapter made me think about was considering the larger context. I know that while I am reading more challenging books I tend to give up and believe that the story is going no where. But as it says in this chapter that you do have to slow down your reading with more challenging reads, and consider the larger picture. This is something that I will certainly take into consideration with my next novel I read.

read for 9-22

The topic of analyzing a text is one section of English that comes natural to me or at least I would like to think so. I have spent countless hours on songmeanings.com trying to figure out what different songs mean and what others think they mean as well. Which is why the "Hotel California" article became my favorite. But, some tips did come out of this that I like, and one of them is the way you organize a textual analysis, I have always organized thematically or at least attempted to and never went with option number two.

The second part of this reading was particularly interesting was the compare and contrast of country and western music and rap. Obviously now that the article is some 15 years old I think both genres have grown further apart but the article was written well and i do have a passion for music so i had no issue reading it. The second reading I like in part two of our reading was the Seeing as Believing article with the artwork, depicting artwork to what the artist wants you to see has never been my strength but i certainly enjoyed it and this article.

thursday 17th

The reading for today on editing and proofreading the message seems to be quite simple. And that is to achieve a good piece of writing you have practice every little detail to get there. And unfortunately in my case editing and proofreading is apart of that.

One thing that I did pick up in the editing section of this is that of editing sentences. I have always had a feeling that my sentences lacked flow and different sentences certainly collide with each other, which is ironic that this is the topic in my news class right now as well.

tuesday 15th blog

The reading for today has certainly got me to start analyzing how my own writing flows and the one that caught my attention the most was that of which how i write for other to read on page 209. And, the three questions that you ask yourself when you are writing will certainly come in handy. Then when you turn to page 210 the one thing that I believe needs to be taken from it is that the main point must be to make sure you prove your thesis and never tailor away from that point.

Secondly, in the second part of the reading things that i took away were this: don't be stubborn or shy with someone revising or editing your work, and next the best way to defend an argument, which i certainly struggled with in high school. With the first part I always felt like i had a problem with people revising my work because although I knew my detail was good i struggled with the grammar and I believe I am finally getting over that but the tips from the paragraph certainly help along with revising in which I felt like I would rush over to finish through all of high school. And the way to defend an argument was what I particularly struggled with in Journalism 1 in high school, I felt like I was always writing editorials and being very stubborn while doing so and I took a good amount of tips away especially that of acknowledging the opposing side.
